The Academic Forest regularly conducts field training in forestry science majors every year. It also develops and provides educational programs needed by the local community within a scope that does not hinder the preservation and academic activities of the Academic Forest.
Field training
Student practical training primarily supports the practical education of undergraduate students from our university and external institutions. The main subjects include Forest Ecology, Tree Physiology, Forest Genetics and Breeding, Wildlife Biology, Forest Entomology, and Forest Engineering. Recently, the use of the Academic Forest has been encouraged not only for students majoring in Forest Environmental Science but also for those in other colleges such as the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Education, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and the College of Pharmacy, leading to an expansion of its utilization.
Youth Career Camp
Organized by the Seoul National University Admissions Office as part of the Ministry of Education's High School Education Contribution University Support Project, this program, subtitled "Nambu Academic Forest Youth Career Camp with Seoul National University Students," conducts a career camp for 11 high school students from the eastern region of South Jeolla Province. Utilizing the educational resources of the Nambu Academic Forest, it operates career exploration, special lecture, experiment, and practical training programs in the field of forest science. Additionally, it offers woodworking and forest healing programs at the Baegunsan Natural Recreation Forest in Gwangyang City to manage the stress of participating students fatigued from their studies. In particular, mentoring sessions with current Seoul National University students have been highly successful in helping participating students resolve their concerns about their careers and studies. Through this career camp, the program aims to contribute to the career development and the formation of positive learning attitudes among participating students, as well as to attract talented individuals to the agricultural and life sciences fields, including forest science.
Short-term forest products income increase process
The Short-Term Forestry Income Enhancement Course, operated with financial support from the Korea Forest Service, targets foresters (including prospective foresters) to enhance their understanding of forestry and provide direction for entry into the field. It offers diverse training on topics such as forestry policies and support policies for returning to rural forestry, cultivation techniques for short-term income-generating forest products, online distribution technologies for forest products, and methods for writing business plans. The course has received high satisfaction ratings in trainee surveys and aims to contribute to increasing forestry income for local residents and to provide guidance for those newly aspiring to forestry management.
